The Things We Cannot Change

"Knowing what we can do nothing about and accepting it as our destiny, this is supreme virtue." Liou Kia-hway.

I find that when we accept the things we cannot change we create within ourselves a moment of decompression. When we allow ourselves to simply decompress we let go of loads of stress and tension in our bodies. Emotionally we may have a wee bit of a breakdown with lots of tears involved, but this is actually a good thing, as it honours the water element within us. Water is meant to flow, not become stagnant. Thus tears can flow and laughter can ripple.

There are many things in life that we cannot change. We can respond to these things begrudgingly, or we can respond with grace. Which one we respond with demonstrates how much trust we actually have in the Universe, in our particular form of Deity, and most of all in ourselves. We really are forced to let go of our control issues.

All by itself, with no help at all from any of us, the flower will bloom. We can enjoy the process without killing the flower trying to force the blossom open. And once it blooms, the fragrance it gives off is indiscriminately shared with all. This is akin to the compassion we experience for ourselves and others as we let go of control and embrace the grace of acceptance. Compassion is indeed the highest form of love that exists.

Making Peace

“Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that defences of peace must be constructed.” Ananda W.P. Guruge

It is amazing what people can stir up in the deep, dark cauldrons of their minds. When we allow our egos to run rampant, we will construct the most hurtful thoughts, fears and insecurities, and then project them onto those around us. We seem, as human beings, to constantly be in a struggle to maintain control of our environments and those who are in them. And anything that does not fit in with our personal constructs of reality must be wrong and even evil because it threatens our personal views.

I believe that it is this dynamic that has led to wars, crusades, and mass genocides.

When we come to realize that, although all people are similar, we are also different, and that although we are all individual, we are all the same on a basic level, it takes away the fear. Without the fear, there becomes no struggle for control. With no struggle for control, peace is able to begin. It starts within us and then ripples out around us as we loosen the strangle holds we think we should have on others’ thoughts and beliefs.

Then all can become radiant and powerful. And this is not a power over others. It is a power within the self that aligns us with the Self, the higher consciousness. When this happens we become more divine than we have ever imagined ourselves to be.

In the Midst of Chaos

We all have days where it would be absolutely wonderful if we could move away and live about 7 hours from everywhere. Of course, I don't do plumbing, heating, electrical or mechanical, so the thought of roughing it is actually a little scary now. I used to camp a LOT and now I like my amenities. So why the draw to "get away from it all"?

Well, I think that it is the innate feeling of wanting to achieve inner peace. But escapism is not inner peace. It is only escapism. The true accomplishment of inner peace comes when we are able to experience it inside ourselves no matter what the chaos is all around us. Anyone who has children will understand that concept. You grab as many moments of peace as you can get while they are running around, yelling and screaming with glee at the top of their voices.

Rosemary Wells wrote a children's book called "The First Tomato". This is one that I would highly recommend for everyone, no matter what age they are. Every now and then, we simply need an escape to the "Bunny Planet". This is actually not escapism, but a form of deep meditation that allows us to experience all the good feelings inside while having an incredibly rough day. So take a trip to the Bunny Planet. It is free and it is an excellent journey!
